“The daughter has confessed that she was the one who took her mother’s life,” Lars Magnusson, the woman’s attorney, told the Aftonbladet newspaper.
Police received a call about around 2.45am on Wednesday morning. Upon arriving at the house, located in a small town in western Värmland in central Sweden, police found the 60-year-old woman alone in the house with her dead mother.
The daughter was arrested without incident.
“It was the daughter herself who called police. But I don’t know if the mother was still alive then or was already dead,” said Magnusson.
According to Aftonbladet, the 60-year-old’s sister is a prominent local politician.
While in police custody on Wednesday, the woman admitted that she had killed her mother, but police are remaining tight-lipped about how and why the 81-year-old mother was murdered.
The 60-year-old’s lawyer told Aftonbladet that his client was suffering from mental problems and will likely undergo a psychological evaluation.
The woman is scheduled to have a remand hearing on Thursday.
