Youth and young adults who receive low marks in primary school are more likely to attempt suicide or self-mutilation compared with those who achieve high marks, according to a Swedish study.

The results come from a study encompassing nearly 450,000 men and women born in Sweden between 1973 and 1977.

The study was carried out by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University and Uppsala University hospital, the Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT) newspaper reports.

“Our results show that life at school provides an important basis for psychic health later in life,” said Anders Hjern, a professor of pediatric epidemiology at Uppsala University hospital and the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), to UNT.

The results of the study are published in the latest issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology medical journal.
