Bundesliga clubs rake in record cash for jersey sponsorship

Most German football fans lament their clubs can’t compete with Europe’s deep-pocketed teams on the pitch. But when it comes to jersey sponsorship money, the Bundesliga even beats leagues in England, Italy and Spain.

According to business daily Handelsblatt, the Bundesliga’s 18 clubs will rake in a record €130 million for the prime advertising space on the chests of the league’s footballers.

Compared to the latest available figures, that sum trounces the €85.5 million and €70.5 million earned respectively by England’s Premier League and Italy’s Serie A last season, as well as the €50 million Spain’s La Liga will make this year.

The most expensive jersey in the Bundesliga belongs to defending champions VfL Wolfsburg – a club sponsored by carmaker Volkswagen. VW will fork over €20 million to put its logo on the team shirt.

Both FC Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 could also each make €20 million from their sponsors – Deutsche Telekom and Gazprom – but the final amount depends on how the clubs perform next season.

Handelsblatt reported that VfL Bochum, which narrowly avoided relegation last year, is the only Bundesliga side still without a jersey sponsor. But officials at the club are still confident they’ll be able to pull in at least €2.5 million for this season.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
