Hot-air balloon makes shocking landing

A hot air balloon landing caused a four-hour power outage when it became entangled with a power line while landing on Monday night near Kevelear in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

One woman was injured when the hot-air balloon pilot attempted to land the craft carrying five passengers on a piece of land between two farms. None of the passengers or the pilot saw the power line until the balloon had already flown into the electrical wires, power lines police spokesman Mannfred Jakobi told The Local.

“The landing was obscured by a tree, so as the balloon went down to this particular spot, no one saw what was happening until it was too late,” he said.

One 38-year-old woman suffered three small second degree burns, two on her arm and one on her back, each smaller than one centimetre.

The flight originated in the small town of Xanten and was en route to Kervenheim some 30 minutes away, he added.

No other emergencies were caused by the power outage.
