Divorce rate on the rise

The number of marriages that ended in divorce is up 3 percent from last year, according to the latest numbers released by the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) on Wednesday. The German state of Saarland had the highest rate of divorce.

This year’s divorce tally topped out at 191,900, compared with 187,100 two years ago. Eleven in 1,000 marriages resulted in divorce in 2008, representing a jump from 1993, when the rate was only 8 in 1,000.

The latest statistics mark a turnaround from the period 2004 to 2007, when the divorce rate was declining. But in the more than 10 years since 1992, the number of failed marriages in Germany rose from 135,000 to 214,000.

A Destatis spokesperson said the increase did not represent a new trend; rather it illustrated statistical fluctuations. The data collected did not survey factors contributing to divorce.

Data showed higher rates of divorce in the state of Saarland, representing some 26 divorces for every 10,000 residents, as well as for Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia, where the divorce rate is above the German national average. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasted the lowest divorce statistics.

In 2008, the average length of marriages ending in divorce was 14.1 years. Around 17 percent more women filed a divorce petition than men.
