Patient dies due to improper IV administration

A patient at Danderyd hospital in Stockholm was reported dead after having received a nutritional intravenous drip too quickly, reports Radio Stockholm.

Patient dies due to improper IV administration

According to a report the hospital submitted to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), the patient received a drip that was enough for twelve hours in the span of an hour. The nurse caring for the patient did not inform the doctor on duty that the IV had been started, nor did she record it in the patient’s chart.

A nutritional drip releases important substances directly into the bloodstream. It is prescribed when patients are unable to intake nutrients in the normal way.
