Daycare workers will likely strike nationwide on Friday in an ongoing wage dispute, forcing parents to scramble for alternative child care.

A strike vote among daycare workers ends on Wednesday evening.

“I expect very strong backing,” public workers’ union Verdi head Frank Bsirske told Hannover daily Neue Presse on Wednesday. “Money and endurance for the workers’ fight will last a very, very long time.”

The childcare profession must finally be valued, and a strike will set the course for the upcoming year, he told the paper, adding that parents need to put pressure on employers to reach a “sustainable agreement.”

Meanwhile daily Frankfurter Rundschau reported on Wednesday that the strike could come as soon as Friday. Verdi is set to announce strike details on Thursday for daycare workers, social workers and teachers at public daycare centres.

The childcare, or Kita, workers are fighting to get a wage increase and better healthcare benefits. Some 19,000 Kita employees walked off the job last Wednesday during a temporary strike.
