Train accident leaks 80,000 litres of petrol

Brandenburg police have allowed residents in Schwedt to return home following their evacuation after some 60,000 litres of petrol leaked from freight train tanker cars due to a derailment on Monday evening.

The accident at the PCK Raffinerie GmbH loading yard damaged one car, which leaked the fuel and forced officers to evacuate some 300 residents from 30 nearby buildings.

Meanwhile fire fighters laid out fire suppression foam around the leak that occurred when one of the cars collided with a pylon.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes late in the evening, though one home close to the accident had to remain empty, police said. Some residents chose to spend the night in a Schwedt hotel, they said.

A spokesperson for the refinery company said, adding that clean up would begin on Tuesday morning.
