“It was an emergency operation on my appendix. I feel fine under the circumstances,” Lars Ohly told the Expressen newspaper from his hospital bed.

Ohly was in Dalarna visiting friends over Easter when he began experiencing stomach pains. He was rushed to hospital in Falun on Friday evening.

The Left party leader is currently too weak to be interviewed and is being treated with pain-killers and antibiotics.

But as an avid sports fan Ohly was more concerned that he had missed the Swedish women’s ice hockey team match against Finland.

“I am upset that Tre Kronor’s (the nickname given the Swedish team) third place play off was not broadcast on the radio,” Ohly said.

Lars Ohly’s press secretary, Maria Almström informed Expressed that the operation and the party leader’s condition would have no effect on the election in 2010.

“He is going to be fit for the fight,” Almström promised.
