Parliamentary blogs fall on deaf ears: survey

Swedish members of parliament are diligent bloggers. But there is very little interest in what most have to say, according to a new survey by Dagens Nyheter.

More than one third of the parliamentary blogs have received no comments on published posts at all, according to the survey.

With the European elections approaching in June and the general election round the corner in 2010, almost 25 percent of Swedish members of parliament, 83 of 349, kept a blog in March 2009. 51 of the bloggers had less than ten comments the entire month and 31 of them had none at all.

Christian Democrats MPs were those that attracted the least interest. Six of the party’s MPs kept a blog and had for the whole of March, attracted a combined four comments.

“We advocate strongly that our members should make use of social media. We have a way to go before I am happy but we have a plan for how things can be improved,” Christian Democrat party secretary Lennart Sjögren said to Dagens Nyheter.

Anna König Jerlmyr of the Moderates and Luciano Astudillo of the Social Democrats received the most comments with 1,038 and 835 respectively. But this is explained by the fact that their blogs are featured on the newspaper Expressen’s web page.

In third place came Johan Linander of the Centre party with 170 comments on his blog in March.

The Dagens Nyheter survey did not include the microblog site Twitter.
