Sahlin hit by massive crisis of confidence

Mona Sahlin has fallen even further behind Fredrik Reinfeldt in the public confidence race, according to Aftonbladet's most recent poll.

Sahlin hit by massive crisis of confidence

The Swedish Prime Minister enjoys more than twice the popularity of the Social Democrat leader among the Swedish electorate.

Sahlin has dropped 9 percentage points and just 27 percent of Swedes are confident or extremely confident in her leadership ability. Support for Reinfeldt is 60 percent, an increase of 6 percentage points.

Following the AMF Pension debacle and the discussions regarding its effects on the Social Democratic party, Sahlin appeared on Sveriges Television’s ‘Gomorron Sverige’ on Wednesday with Wanja Lundby-Wedin, head of Sweden’s Trade Union Confederation (LO).

In a show of good faith, Sahlin clearly expressed her support for Lundby-Wedin, who recently resigned from the board of AMF Pension.

Lars Ohly was the only Swedish politician voters reported less confidence in than Sahlin. Aftonbladet reported 20 percent public support for the Left party leader, indicating a decrease of five percentage points.

Things looked up, however, for the Green party, which saw a one point increase to 26 percent, and thus a number two ranking among the party leaders.

But the rest of the Swedish political elite also had a lousy day. Confidence in Maud Olofsson fell five points to 34, Jan Björklund saw a decrease of one point to 29, and Göran Hägglund by the same to 28 percent.

Sifo Research International, which conducted the survey, interviewed 972 Swedes over the age of 18 about their confidence in the political leadership between March 31st and April 6th. The poll was conducted in the middle of the AMF debate.
