The department store said it plans to operate pharmacies either inside its department stores or in adjacent premises, magazine Dagens Medicin reports.
Deputy CEO Joakim Forssell said it was not yet certain whether Åhlens would run pharmacies in all its stores but the company intended making a major investment in the emerging sector.
“We want to do this in a methodical, proper and correct manner. It isn’t just a flash in the pan. We’re more prepared for this than most people realise,” Forsell told the magazine.
The Swedish parliament is expected to abolish Apoteket’s monopoly on the sale of pharmaceuticals when it votes on the issue on April 29th.
