Each week, the plant in Henningsdorf just northwest of Berlin receives a shipment of scrap metal, the paper said. But on January 14, a delivery from the Berliner Postbank spayed cash when workers cut into a safe.
Berlin police spokesman Bernhard Schodrowski confirmed the incident, saying authorities had conducted an investigation on suspicion that the safe had been stolen.
No one will be charged, because the Postbank has since blamed the mistake on a careless employee during a branch office move. The safe was apparently not completely emptied before the move, spokesperson Ralf Palm told the paper.
Meanwhile the bank is taking “all conceivable measures to get the money back,” he said.
The waste management company told the paper the safe had already been shipped out of the country and that it was a “stroke of luck” it had turned up in Henningsdorf.
