The town of Delitzsch reported the low temperature at 6 am, meteorologist Donald Bäcker told broadcaster ARD on Tuesday morning. The capital Berlin wasn’t far behind, with outlying areas reporting a low of -19 degrees Celsius early in the day.
While temperatures may be bitter cold, the country is experiencing a rare spate of winter sunshine. But weather experts expect more snow on the way by late evening in the northern parts of the country.
Meanwhile, a 77-year-old retiree in Weimar was found frozen to death when she didn’t return from an afternoon stroll on Monday, police reported.
