Merkel calls for more flexibility in education

Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday said the German educational system must become “more porous” so as to allow greater mobility for students.

“There shouldn’t be any dead ends, but rather doors should open,” she told the business daily Handelsblatt. “Young people with immigration background should have the same educational opportunities in our country.”

Merkel was referring to the widespread criticism that many children from immigrant household are often shunted into non-university track schools that offer fewer chances to advance in German society. She said the key was improving the German language skills of such children.

Merkel also said Germany must encourage “more young people for natural sciences and technical courses and enable the universities to train them for future careers as best as possible.”
