The soldier was on leave from Iraq when he apparently collapsed at his residence in Wetzel Housing Area in Baumholder, Germany, the US Army Europe said in a statement.

“His family heard a crash in the living room and found him laying there,” US Army spokesman Richard Spiegel told The Local on Tuesday. “They called for neighbours to help and medics did all they could but pronounced him dead on the scene.”

Sgt. Brandon Augustus, 29, of Baton Rouge, Lousiana, was pronounced dead at 6:52 am on December 11 by a German medical official.

Augustus was a medic assigned to C Company, 47th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Armored Division, which is currently deployed to Iraq.

The military said the cause of his “sudden and unexpected death” is currently under investigation.

“No foul play is expected and I would characterise this as a medical investigation,” Spiegel said, adding that such an investigation can take several weeks.

Augustus is survived by his wife and four-year-old son who both live on base.

A memorial service is scheduled for December 19 in Baumholder, Germany.
