The poll, conducted for the December issue of German Reader’s Digest, found that 72 percent call their mothers at least once a week. Those polled cited a need for their mother’s care that extended well beyond the time when they left her nest.
Germans came in third for the most phone calls to mum, behind India and China, in the nine-nation poll that included the United Kingdom and the United States.
The trend tends to reverse, however, after Germans pass their 40th birthday. At this point mothers get needier and regularly call their children themselves.
Germans between 14 and 29-years-old need their mother more than other age groups, with 79 percent on the horn with their mothers each day. But about 70 percent of older Germans still call their mothers at least once a week.
Daughters were also more likely to stay in touch – 43 percent said they phoned with their mothers each day, while only 19 percent of men did the same.
The poll surveyed 438 people who no longer live with their mothers.
