The poll, conducted with the support of the DKI German hospital institute’s yearly “Hospital Barometer” report, found that the number of hospitals in debt rose from 20 percent to 32 percent.

Only 21 percent of the hospital managers polled said they were happy with their current economic situation.

Meanwhile every second hospital expects their numbers to deteriorate by 2009. The collective deficit of German hospitals will reach some €5 billion by the end of next year, the study found.
