The operation will remove a bone chip that was dislodged on Sunday during a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in the Globen arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
“It’s not a long-term thing,” Senators general manager Bryan Murray said.
“We’re assured it’s not more than a couple of weeks type of thing.”
Alfredsson, a 13-year veteran from Sweden, missed 12 games last season with knee, groin and hip injuries but the 35-year-old right wing contributed 40 goals and 49 assists.
“He tried this week to skate and it felt all right, but he still felt it,”
Ottawa coach Craig Hartsburg said. “Between the doctor and himself and us, we decided this was the best time to get it over with.”
Dany Heatley will take over captain’s duties for the Senators.
