A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Swedish couple on the southern Caribbean island of Tobago on Thursday. The arrested man denies the offence.

“The suspect was arrested early on Friday morning following witness reports of a man fleeing the scene. One witness was able to give a very detailed description,” local police officer Fitzroy Frederick said to news agency TT.

The arrested man, according to Frederick, bears a close resemblance to the drawing that the police were able to make from witness testimony.

The 32-year-old man has been interrogated but denies the charges.

The police investigation is continuing with DNA testing of the suspect and an examination of the evidence accumulated at the murder scene.

“We would also like to forward our condolences to the couple’s relatives and the Swedish people. They should know that we are doing all that we can to see that the murderer is served justice,” Frederick said.

The couple, identified in several media sources as 62-year-old Anna Sundsvall and 73-year-old Åke Alsson, were found murdered in their holiday home on Thursday morning.

The couple had bought the home four years ago and according to local police divided their time between Sweden and Tobago. The house lies on the south-western tip of the island of Tobago in the picturesque area of Bon Accord.

The alarm was sounded by a security guard patrolling the area when he heard screams.

Police arrived at the scene with emergency staff and found Sundsvall already dead. Alsson was barely alive and was rushed to Scarborough Regional Hospital where he later died.

The circumstances indicate that the murders occurred in connection with a burglary. A safe was found bust open in the couple’s house.

According to the newspaper Trinidad & Tobago Express, 420 people have now been murdered in the country so far this this year, four of whom on the island of Tobago.

Three injured in suspected knife attack in central Sweden

Police were called to the scene at shortly before 1.30pm on Friday after several women who Swedish police described as “elderly” were found injured with stab wounds.

The man suspected of attacking the three women, who is reportedly in his late 20s, was later shot by police. According to Region Västmanland he is “seriously injured”.

“They have been injured with a sharp object but whether it is a knife or something else, we do not know right now,” Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro, a spokesperson from the local police told Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT.

The three women have been taken to hospital, with one, in her 70s, described as having serious injuries. The others’ injuries are less severe.

“We are investigating two crime scenes,” Ahlén-Svalbro said. “As far as I understand the situation, two of them were injured in one area and the other somewhere else, but both areas are in central Västerås.”

The police have opened an investigation into aggravated assault, he added.

“We have already received several witness statements and would like to hear from any other witnesses who have seen or heard something.”
