According to the proposal, all German citizens will receive an “electronic mailbox” where they can indefinitely store legally binding documents. These can then be used for official purposes at government agencies.

The e-government initiative – reportedly called De-Mail – is expected to be announced by Chancellor Angela Merkel next month at an IT conference. The service would the first of its kind anywhere.
