Despite a five-percent drop in beer consumption this year, Oktoberfest organizers said on Sunday they were “satisfied” by a “beautiful, normal Wiesn,” referring to the meadows where the beer bash is traditionally held.
The poor weather – rain and temperatures below 11 degrees Celsius – saw the main beer tents overflowing with visitors. It also led to a spike in the consumption of mulled wine outside the tents. Organizers said they sold 2,000 litres of the heady stuff, much of it on the last four days.
The hearty Bavarian cuisine seems to have been a hit at this year’s Oktoberfest too with organizers saying over 100 oxen were consumed during the two-week party.
Police in Munich too said they were satisfied the beer-fuelled bash passed off with the usual brawls but without any major incident. A police spokesman said one reason for worry was that festival goers increasingly appeared drunk at 10 in the morning on the Wiesn.
