Bomb scare closes Berlin Tegel airport

An unclaimed suitcase caused a security emergency that closed off a portion of Berlin’s Tegel airport on Tuesday morning.

Specialists were called in to defuse a possible bomb, a spokesperson for the German police said, but it turned out to be a normal suitcase containing underwear and an umbrella.

But flights from airlines Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Air Berlin and Lux Air were delayed in the operation.

The bomb scare did not effect the return of the German tourists who were arriving home Tuesday morning after being held captive in the Egyptian desert for almost two weeks. They landed in a military zone at the airport.

Germany is feeling particularly sensitive to terrorism threats after two Somali-born terror suspects arrested last week on a KLM aircraft at Cologne-Bonn airport in western Germany were found to have been “planning an imminent attack,” according to state prosecutors.
