The patrol came under attack at around 7 am to the west of their base when a man in a car detonated an explosive device, damaging two military vehicles. The Defence Ministry said it believes the attacker died during the incident.

“Two NATO vehicles were slightly damaged and no one was killed or injured in the blast,” said Colonel Roner Boska, an officer at a German-run base in the town.

German troops have become a more frequent target for insurgents as violence intensifies in northern Afghanistan. The German parliament plans to vote October 7 on whether to increase and the country’s troop presence for the NATO military alliance’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) by 1,000 to 4,500 and extend its stay in the country.
