“Much of what makes a good entrepreneur – the capacity to solve problems, plan one’s work, take responsibility and work with others – are also the qualities that students need to complete their studies and be succeed in adulthood,” write three government ministers in an article published in the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper.
Education in entrepreneurship is also valuable outside the business world, and the government hopes that “entrepreneurship will serve as a unifying theme through the entire education system”.
The ministers lays out a strategy whereby the skills and abilities which serve as the foundation of entrepreneurship will receive greater attention in Sweden’s schools.
The National Agency for Education (Skolverket) will be in charge of how the plans are implemented, and a new high school programme focused on economics is under consideration.
High school apprenticeship programmes will receive 350 million kronor ($51.6 million) in the autumn budget to support apprentice places from 2009 to 2011.
The government will also work to bring about more business-oriented education programmes in Swedish colleges.
In addition, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Nutek) and the National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) will be tasked with bridging the academic and business worlds, write enterprise minister Maud Olofsson, education minister Jan Björklund, and higher education minister Lars Leijonborg.
