Swede held in prison in Yemen

A 26-year-old Swedish citizen has been imprisoned in Yemen for the last nine months, media reported on Wednesday.

The man’s family in Gothenburg doesn’t know what the charges are against him, and nor do the Swedish authorities, reports the Göteborg-Posten newspaper.

Sweden’s foreign ministry has requested that Yemeni authorities provide a timetable for the 26-year-old’s legal proceedings, but so far nothing has happened.

Nor has the man been informed of the charges against him.

Sweden lacks any diplomatic representation in Yemen, but instead conducts its diplomatic relations through the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sana, the capital of Yemen.

As far as the foreign ministry knows, the 26-year-old Swede does not have access to a defence attorney and contact with his family has been sporadic.

The man’s relatives hadn’t heard from the man for months until two weeks ago when he called his mother.

During the conversation he said nothing about why he was in prison.
