Björklund: ‘Leijonborg ouster rumours false’

Liberal party (Folkpartiet) leader Jan Björklund has rejected reports that he is set to remove his predecessor Lars Leijonborg from the government in October.

“I don’t know how rumours start and are spread, but I can conclude that the details given in Dagens Nyheter today regarding changes to cabinet ministers are wrong,” Jan Björklund said in a comment through his press secretary, Anna Neuman.

National daily Dagens Nyheter (DN) reported on Saturday morning that Björklund will shuffle his ministers and remove Leijonborg from the government when he has presented the pending research proposal in the middle of October.

The DN reports indicate that Leijonborg will be replaced by Johan Pehrson who will be given responsibility for EU issues. Current EU minister Cecilia Malmström will take charge of research and universities, the areas under Leijonborg supervision for the past year.

Björklund was unwilling to comment on the reports further.

Leijonborg was given the opportunity to remain within the government as a minister despite being replaced by Jan Björklund as Liberal party leader in September 2007, after ten years in the post.
