Bundeswehr attacked again in Afghanistan

German soldiers were attacked on Monday in Afghanistan, the Defense Ministry reported. The attack comes less than a week after a German soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in the same region.

A German Bundeswehr patrol came under attack with hand guns around 10:56 am some 9 kilometres north of Kunduz, the Defense Ministry said.

“Explosions of unknown cause were also seen near the patrol,” a spokesman said, adding that no one was injured.

Violence in Afghanistan has intensified recently. Last Wednesday an IED (improvised explosive device) exploded next to an eight-vehicle German convoy patrolling the outskirts of Kunduz where the German military has its base, killing one German soldier and injuring three. The Taliban claimed the attack.

On Sunday, another German patrol was targeted by a bomb west of Kunduz. No one was injured and the vehicles incurred only minor damage. Another deadly incident Friday made major headlines amid growing opposition to the German deployment in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan when German troops killed two children and a woman at a security checkpoint. The German defence ministry denied a report in Monday’s Financial Times Deutschland newspaper that German troops had failed to follow guidelines.

Germany has some 3,500 troops stationed in northern Afghanistan as part of the NATO military alliance’s ISAF.
