German public broadcaster ARD reported that 50 percent of those asked said they were very concerned about rising tensions with Russia following outbreak of hostilities over South Ossetia in recent weeks.

Some 37 percent said they had few concerns about a new Cold War developing and 11 percent responded that they had none at all.

Only 26 percent of Germans support Georgia’s bid to become a member of NATO, which is strongly backed by the United States. A strong majority of 58 percent opposes Georgia joining the transatlantic alliance.

ARD carried out the survey between August 19 – 20 and polled 1,000 people.
