Truck driver smuggles 4,500 litres of alcohol into Sweden

A 25-year-old man has been charged with trying to smuggle 4,500 litres of pure alcohol into Sweden.

The seizure took place in the southern Swedish town of Ystad on Monday. According to local newspaper Ystands Allehanda, the 4,500 litre haul is the biggest ever since the ferry to Poland was introduced in 1967.

The suspect was driving a truck that contained over two hundred cartons of booze, each filled with two ten litre drums with 90 percent pure alcohol.

Customs officials became suspicious when the man couldn’t answer simple questions about what was in his truck.

The driver denies all charges.
