Karolinska Institutet comes second in the Nordic region after 45th-placed Copenhagen University. The next highest-ranking university in Sweden is Uppsala, at 71st place, followed by Stockholm in 86th place. Lund University was in 97th place.
The Chinese study ranks universities based on how often researchers are cited in peer-reviewed journals and how many Nobel Prizes researchers have won. The survey has been criticised in the past for favouring universities with strength in the natural sciences.
The international list was topped by Harvard. Eight out of the top ten universities were in the United States. The top non-American university was Cambridge, in fourth place. The highest-ranked institution in a non-English speaking country was the university of Tokyo, in nineteenth place.
