During the first six months of 2008 road accidents involving wild animals increased by 15 percent in comparison with the corresponding period of 2007, a new survey by the national council for wild animal accidents (Nationella viltolycksrådet).
From January to June 17,218 road accidents involving wild animals were reported, of which 14,005 were with deer. Accidents involving wild boar doubled from 413 to 815 incidents.
35,166 accidents involving wild animals were reported in 2007, the highest on record, according to the council.
It is the fifth consecutive year that the council has compiled statistics. The statistics are based of accidents that are reported to the police.
The council was set up with two purposes: to liaise with hunters looking for injured wild animals and to work to reduce the number of collisions with wild animals on Sweden’s roads.
