German candidates for chancellor also travel to Washington to meet with the US president, Voigt told Dortmund daily Ruhr Nachrichten on Tuesday, adding that the visit should be an important symbol for German-American relations.
“There is a big chance that Barack Obama will choose Berlin, and not Paris or London, to lay out his vision for European-American relations,” Voigt told the paper.
