Jogger reports possible bear in Hesse

Hesse police have reported another bear sighting in Lahn-Dill county, after the first sighting this month turned out to be a circus llama.

On Sunday evening a jogger reported seeing a “bear-like animal” near Dillenburg-Nanzenbach, police reported.

Authorities have launched a search for the animal that includes a helicopter.

On July 6 another “absolutely believable” witness reported a bear sighting which police concluded was actually a stray circus llama.

Authorities from Dillenburg and Gießen had mobilized a helicopter and authorized hunters to investigate the lead, but came up empty handed.

At the time a nature expert from German nature protection agency BUND said that finding a bear in Hesse would be “extremely unlikely,” because the last live bear hasn’t been spotted in the area since 1678.

“Bruno,” the only other brown bear seen recently in Germany, was shot and killed in the Bavarian Alps in June 2006 and is now on display in Munich.
