On Wednesday morning police met with the contractor responsible for the construction of the Kista Galleria shopping centre. The collapse concerned a steel construction arching over Hanstavägen in connection with the extension of the shopping centre.

“We have opened an preliminary investigation regarding a breach of health and safety regulations,” said Mats Eriksson of Stockholm police.

One man died and another was seriously injured when they fell from the arch which collapsed on Tuesday evening. A further man was seriously injured when construction debris landed on the car in which he was sitting.

It was not clear on Wednesday morning if the man sitting in the car was connected to construction work on the site.

The two injured men, born in 1980 and 1954 respectively, are being cared for at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna and remain in a serious condition.

“One is being cared for for serious injuries while the other has serious injuries which are life-threatening,” said Ulla Sörensen at Karolinska University Hospital.

The whole area around the construction of the Kista Galleria has been sealed off for a technical inspection and during the morning building inspectors from the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) will visit the site.
