Shopping centres face darker days

Shopping centres in Sweden have prospered and multipled in recent years, particularly in the Stockholm area. But gloomier economic prospects mean that the prolonged shopping spree may be coming to an end.

Charlotte Strömberg, head of the Nordic division of the Jones Lang LaSalle property consultancy, is sceptical about the liklihood that all of the shopping centres currently planned will actually be constructed. Furthermore, she predicts that those centres which have not revitalized themselves may face problems.

“It is a fact of life that competition never stands still for the shopping centres. Threrefore, there will be increased pressure on facilities which have not been able to renovate,” the real estate expert told Svenska Dagbladet. (SvD)
