“Rescue services evacuated the eight people shortly after 10:30 pm. They are all in good shape,” Kajsa Lindmark, a spokesperson for the Swedish high-tech minerals group, told AFP.
The group had been trapped in the iron ore mine near the town of Malmberget since 4pm. .
At the time of the incident, about 50 people were inside the mine but most were evacuated immediately except for the eight who had sought refuge in an area where fresh air was pumped in pending the start of the rescue operation.
The group had been trapped after a vehicle “began burning at a depth of 1,070 metres at around 4pm. I’m not sure how it started,” Lindmark said earlier.
