The picture depicts Tony Deogan lying in a coma in his hospital bed and is part of a documentary entitled “The dark-side of football” which was published on community website YouTube on June 12th. Radha Deogan, Tony’s mother, is demanding that YouTube remove the film from its site and has reported the matter to the police.
“What am I to believe, why can’t Tony’s memory be left in peace?,” said Radha Deogan to Dagens Nyheter.
The film tells the story of the infamous day in IFK Gothenburg supporter Tony Deogan’s life that led to his death at the hands of a group of supporters from Stockholm club AIK in Högalidsparken in central Stockholm on July 29th 2002.
The picture is not part of the police investigation that has been unable to lead to a conviction for Deogan’s death. Mats Andersson at Stockholm police expressed surprise at the news of the new picture.
“It is very unfortunate that material that could be of interest to the investigation is on the internet,” he said.
The investigation into Deogan’s death is officially closed. His fate generated a storm of debate and attention at the time as his was the first, and hitherto only, fatality caused by football violence in Sweden.
