Jubilant Turks to face Germany in semifinals

Berlin and other big German cities had barely recovered from Thursday night celebrations when Germany got through the European Championship quarterfinals when the Turkish team did the same on Friday – after penalties – and the celebrations started all over again.

Tens of thousands of Turkish Germans blocked streets through the west end of Berlin and other cities with a big Turkish population, waving flags, hanging out of cars and generally just making lots and lots of noise.

The celebrations came after a largely uninspiring match against Croatia trickled out of time without a goal for either side. Extra time initially also failed to deliver, until just a few minutes before the end when first the Croats, and then just seconds later, the Turks scored a goal.

The teams were then forced to penalties, which the Turks won, with the final score 4-2.

The result not only puts Turkey into the semifinals, it also means they will face Germany on Wednesday.

Commentators are already totting up statistics of matches between the two countries, pointing out that Germany have won 11 of the 17 games against Turkey since 1951, with Turkey pulling off three victories.

It should be noted though, that of the last three games, Turkey won two and one was undecided.

Wednesday will provide an exciting night, on the pitch as well as in the cafes, beer gardens and restaurants of Germany’s big cities.

Until then, football fans are awaiting the match between Holland and Russia tonight, and then Italy and Spain on Sunday.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
