“That puts Germany among the countries with the biggest inequality when it comes to pay for men and women,” EU Commissioner for Employment, Vladimir Spidla told German daily Die Welt on Monday.
Only Estonia, Cyprus and Slovenia have similar or disparities.
On average, EU women earn 15 percent less than men, and Spidla told the paper that the difference is lower in countries that have fewer women in the job market.
“I encourage employers to pay equal salary for equal work,” Spidla said. “Employers play a key role in fighting unfair salary differences in the EU. It’s important that they also follow the relevant regulations too.”
Spidla added that fair wages are not just an ethical question, but would improve worker’s motivation and increase productivity.
