“There is no threat to the German population,” Gabriel told public broadcaster ARD late on Wednesday. “We have a report that one can assume there was no release of radioactivity.”
The European Commission earlier on Wednesday had reported that coolant had escaped from the primary cooling system of the reactor in the small EU member tucked between Austria and Croatia.
Slovenian officials said the reactor had been completely shut down by 7:30 pm on Wednesday and the small leak wasn’t a danger to the environment.
Gabriel said the German government had asked the German Weather Service if it was possible any radioactivity could be carried to Germany by the wind and the Interior Ministry had been informed in case any necessary precautions needed to be undertaken.
He also criticized the media for reporting the incident had caused “a Europe-wide nuclear alarm” as the EU supposedly has no such thing. Although there is an information system in place, he said calling it a nuclear alarm was “a bit overdone.”
