Membership collapse worries union boss

The Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) spokesperson Wanja Lundby-Wedin used her opening speech at the 26th LO congress to address the collapse in union membership.

Membership collapse worries union boss

LO opened its 26th congress on Saturday. The congress will continue for five days and high on the agenda is the dramatic fall in union membership which has occurred in the past year.

Lundby-Wedin was self-critical in her speech.

“It can’t all be blamed on the government. It is not the government which will re-recruit former members and create the motivation to renew union membership,” Lundby-Wedin conceded in her speech opening the conference.

Lundby-Wedin directed criticism at LO for not being clear enough in its communication.

“Are we clear enough in answering the question of whether pay would be higher or lower if the union did not exist? Are we clear enough in answering the question of whether employment conditions would be better or worse if the union did not exist?”

The LO spokesperson promised that these questions would be addressed and clearer answers developed. By the time of the 27th congress in 2012 union membership will have increased, Lundby-Wedin pledged.
