62 percent of those polled by Sifo in a survey for local newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad declared their support for a permanent link across Öresund.
Men are more positive than women and most Helsingborg residents would favour a road/rail tunnel.
Local councillor Peter Danielsson is among those pushing hard for a link traversing the four kilometre stretch of water between Helsingborg and Helsingör.
“Previously it was only a north-western Skåne issue. Now the whole region of Skåne and Själland support us. The next step will be to establish the issue with ministers in Sweden and Denmark,” he said.
Danielsson argues that a link between the two towns, the HH link, is one of the most important long term strategic issues that they face.
“There is enormous potential here. There is almost a million people living in this northern region. The Danes need the labour and we need the jobs, so we need to increase the level of integration and exchange,” Danielsson said to Helsingborgs Dagblad.
The idea of a a tunnel between Helsingborg and Helsingör was first raised 136 years ago. In 1962 the local council decided on a bridge. In 2000 a bridge/tunnel link was opened between Malmö and Copenhagen instead.
