Tougher sentence for sledgehammer murder

The Court of Appeals in Gothenburg has lengthened the sentence of the woman who killed her partner on board their sailboat outside of Stenungsund on Sweden’s west coast.

The appeals court sentenced the woman to ten years in prison for murder for beating her 48-year-old boyfriend over the head repeatedly with a sledgehammer and dumping his body overboard.

The district court had previously sentenced the woman to eight years for manslaughter, a charge to which she had previously pled guilty.

After the body of the victim was found in the water last autumn, the woman initially said that her partner had fallen overboard. But blood found on the boat and the injuries on the man’s body led prosecutors to pursue charges of murder.
