Teenage girl sued for millions over swimming pool fire

An insurance company is seeking 32 million kronor ($5.4 million) in damages from a 16-year-old girl who burned down Brunflo swimming pool complex near Östersund in June 2007.

The girl was sentenced to 150 hours of community service for negligence constituting a public danger.

To add to the girl’s woes, insurance company Länsförsäkringar is seeking damages of some 32 million kronor. Östersund’s county council has added a further claim for 403,000 kronor for the excess.

The claim for damages will be decided in a civil case only after the sentence in the criminal case is confirmed.

The 16-year-old was the eldest of the three teenagers who started the fire. Despite confessing to their role in the fire, the other two have not faced charges as they were below the age of criminal responsibility at the time.

The Brunflo swimming complex was totally destroyed by fire in June 2007. Fire crews from four different fire stations were involved in fighting the blaze.
