The flight, carrying water-treatment installations, disinfectant, water pouches, hygiene and cooking kits, tarpaulin covers and blankets, will be unloaded at a United Nations depot in Bangkok.

From there, six smaller planes will ferry the equipment to Yangon, with lorries waiting to deliver the materials on the ground.

“We are certain that our local agents will be able to distribute the aid under the terms agreed with the government of Myanmar (Burma),” said World Vision logistician Daniel Ginsberg.

The organization has 580 people working on 31 development projects across the country, and said its agents have already distributed drinking water, rice and clothing to some 100,000 people affected in the Irrawaddy delta.

According to the government’s official figures, nearly 134,000 people are dead or missing two weeks after the cyclone struck Burma.
