A cargo plane brought six water treatment units for around 40,000 people in the former capital Rangoon, the German Foreign Office announced late on Thursday. The flight also carried emergency medical kits and medicines for areas struck by the natural disaster.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he was “relieved” that several days of effort were finally paying off and that German aid could finally be delivered to those who needed it most.
“Now we have to ensure that our help gets to those people in the regions devastated by the storm,” he said.
Steinmeier renewed the call by the German government for the Burmese junta to allow international aid workers unfettered access to the disaster areas.
Another aid flight from the German Red Cross is currently underway to Rangoon carrying six further water treatment units with a capacity for 20,000 people.
