Young man charged over balcony killing

A 19-year-old man in Gothenburg is accused of pushing his mother to her death from a fifth floor balcony.

A 19-year-old man was indicted on Friday at Gothenburg District Court for the alleged murder of his mother.

An argument about a lift from the airport ended tragically in Kallebäck, a suburb outside Gothenburg, with the young man allegedly shoving his mother from the the fifth floor balcony of a nine storey building.

It was around midnight on a cold February night when the neighbours awoke to the frantic screams of a woman whose son was attempting to throw her over the balcony railing.

The teenager had just returned from a trip abroad. In police interrogation he recalled how he had to make his own way home from the airport despite his mother’s protestations that she had in fact been there to pick him up.

The argument ended with the 62-year-old woman falling from a height of 16 metres, colliding with another balcony railing before hitting the ground. Paramedics were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive the woman’s heart.

According to the indictment, the teenager got his mother in a stranglehold and began beating her in the moments leading to her fall from the balcony.

The police have not discovered a motive for the killing. When questioned the man stated that he did not believe he wanted to kill his mother.
