Triple-murderer re-arrested

Recently re-leased triple-murderer Nikita Fouganthine, previously known as Juha Valjakkala, was arrested Sunday evening in Northern Finland, Helsinki police told the Finnish news agency FNB.

He had been sought earlier on Sunday after having violated the terms of his supervised conditional release.

Fouganthine was sentenced to life in prison for murdering a family of three in the Swedish town of Åmsele in 1988. He served his sentence in a Finnish prison.

The prison performed a surveillance check late on Saturday night and stated that he wasn’t at home. The telephone granted him as a condition of his release remained in his house, and the prison was unable to reach him after that.

Fouganthine’s conditional release began in February, and with close supervision set to continue until July, after which the conditional release was to be made permanent.

People under supervised release are to abstain completely from intoxicating substances and be reachable by mobile phone 24 hours a day.

Because Fouganthine has broken the conditions of his release, he may once again end up behind bars.

Anders Sjöberg of the international cooperation division of the Swedish police said that his division has been in contact with Finnish police regarding the matter.

“They are going to let us know if they need any help,” he told the TT news agency.
