Baltic Sea ice hits record low

Ice levels in the Baltic Sea region hit record lows in the past winter. New figures from Sweden's meteorological agency SMHI indicate the lowest levels for over 100 years.

The southern part of the Gulf of Bothnia did not have any ice at all during the winter, with the exception of some harbours and bays near the coast.

Even in the Gulf of Finland there was very little ice during the winter.

In total 49,000 square kilometres of the Baltic Sea were covered in ice, around a quarter of the surface area that is expected in an average winter. This constitutes the lowest amount of ice since records began in the beginning of the 20th century.

The ice season is now over – 1-2 weeks ahead of normal. The only remaining ice that remains is that which is lying in the far north of the Gulf of Bothnia.
